Creativity Matters

Each centre received professional development into issues surrounding children’s creativity and the multiple languages of children. An artist (or team of artists) was placed in each setting for approximately 2 days per week to work with teachers, children’s centre professionals, the children and their families and communities. In the first year four children’s centres were involved in the project.  In the second year the project expanded to include 6 new settings; 4 primary schools, 1 private nursery, and 1 voluntary organisation.  The project is now in its third year, and has expanded to include a further 10 new settings.

The project is designed to promote the creative capacity of children, and increased access and engagement in the arts, whilst providing high quality participatory arts and promote children’s cultural citizenship. Involvement in the project acknowledges the experiences, skills, passions and gifts of children, practitioners, artists and other creative and education professionals.

Creativity Matters aims to redress the gap within arts and educational research. Through the combined effort of researchers, practitioners, artists, community and creative professionals - in the fields of the arts, education, architecture, design and curators and museum educators - the Creativity Matters aims to develop an excellence model for arts and cultural-based learning which will inform an integrated ‘partnership’ approach to programme policy and development locally and at a wider level.
