Summer Term 2009

Please click here to find out what the Reception class has been doing this Term.

There have been a number of exciting activities and outings for the pupils at St Christopher’s.  Early in the term, Year 4 visited The Tower of London and just before Half Term the Museum of London.- reports to follow.

Year 6 went to the Imperial War Museum and both Years 5 and 6 are at Harrow House Activity Centre in Swanage - they are lucky to have chosen the earliest sunny week of this Summer.

Years 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 have enjoyed sitting SATs and we expect excellent results.

Years 3, 4 and 5 sat their LAMDA exams and all but one was awarded a Merit or Distinction.  Everyone did their best and should be congratulated.

During the first Half of Term the school took part in Readathon for the Roald Dahl Cancer Research Charity and collected over £300.

At present children can be seen skipping as if their lives depended on it.  Towards the end of June our children will ‘skip for charity’.  This event in aid of the British Heart Foundation has proved to be the most popular of all activities we have enjoyed for charity.

Reception have been enjoying their study of the lifecycle of the tortoiseshell butterfly.  They received butterfly eggs which quickly turned into caterpillars [the larva stage] and then into the pupa stage before breaking out into beautiful butterflies.  This whole process took no more than 4 weeks.  The children were fascinated.

We have plenty of activities arranged for the rest of this term including a visit to the Greenwich Planetarium, our Sports Day, Summer Fête, Prize Giving and Speech Day, but before that our summer term musical production of ‘Oliver’.  As you can see from the photo, the children have greatly enjoyed the rehearsals.

We were visited by MiMi – a music teacher from the north of Thailand, who listened to our ‘Oliver’ practice, went to see the show in the West End, courtesy of our friend, Rev Eric Thorn, and is now fully intending to introduce English musical comedy to Thailand.

It was very pleasing to hear that our commitment to extra-curricular activities bears fruit.

Research published byISCat itsAnnual Conference 2009 [2nd June] revealed a link between the amount of extra-curricular activities undertaken by pupils and their academic performance. The study of over 500 independent schools revealed that pupils in the top-performing schools took part, on average, in 50 per cent more activities than those pupils at less successful schools.

Lastly, congratulations to Jai. Kishan Patel who is a senior prizewinner in St.Christopher's Art Competition for his Fruit picture - looks delicious!
